Edward VIII : coronation : tablecloth with flowers & coat of arms

A pretty floral-edged tablecloth made to celebrate the coronation of Edward VIII - floral emblems and the coat of arms.  I wonder what the stitcher thought when he abdicated?  She didn't undo her stitching and change the king's name; and she didn't finish it.  It was apparently found wrapped in newspaper in an older lady's home.  Measures approx 32inches square.  Probably sold as a pre-printed tablecloth with the edges already hemmed, just needing embroidery.

I wonder if there are almost-identical examples with George VI on them instead of Edward VIII?

Edward VIII : abdication sampler (II)

This is the second version I've seen of this particular sampler: I blogged about the first one here.  Or this may be the same sampler, reauctioned, as both have AMP 1936 on them, likely the initials of the maker.  Design area is 14inches x 18inches.

This one is very particularly about Edward and the abdication: it might seem almost disloyal to be celebrating the king who left the throne rather than focusing on the king who took on the job, but in the public view (with the press barons censoring/editing coverage of Edward VIII's wilder/less wise moments) he was an heroic figure, and his abdication a loss.

Sylvia over at Linens and Royals bought this one - read her blog entry here.  She says it's a Royal School of Needlework design, original price 7/6.

I still like the sense of the modern age in this sampler - industry, sport etc as well as traditional Union Jacks and guardsmen.  And the ?prescient inclusion of the three military figures representing army, navy and air force, with WW2 only two years in the future.

Edward VIII: abdication sampler (I)

This one's a kinda sorta coronation sampler, in that the verse acknowledges that he wasn't crowned.  Abdication sampler? It's from a 2009 auction and was described thus:

An Edward VIII Coronation sampler, worked with a six verse poem, crowned ER cipher, golf clubs, figures, facade of Hampton Court, boat and factories, completed by AMP 1936, unframed, 23 x 18ins


The website doesn't show the estimated or the realised prices.

Interesting to see how it reflects 'modern life' with the factories and golf clubs and so forth, when most coronation samplers from George VI and Elizabeth II focus on classic British/royal imagery such as beefeaters, crowns, coaches and other symbols.
